Leaked documents received by Green Party Jarrow parliamentary candidate Bryan Atkinson reveal that South Tyneside council has put the interests of the dairy industry before those of the council tax payer and the environment. A briefing document for the council Cabinet meeting to discuss the issue on Wednesday 25th June also reveals that other council budgets will be raided to pick up the cost of the milk increase. more...

Greens back wind turbine plan

Bryan Atkinson, Green Party parliamentary candidate for the Jarrow constituency, has pledged his support for the revived wind turbine proposal for the A&P Tyne yard at Hebburn. Bring green jobs to the Tyne

South Tyneside Green Party has called on the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform John Hutton to ensure firm support for offshore renewable energy projects, after Mr Hutton's November announcement of plans to build up to 7,000 offshore wind turbines.

Bryan Atkinson, Green Party Parliamentary candidate for Jarrow, has written a letter to Mr Hutton, asking him for "policies that will encourage and drive" the wind turbine proposals. more...

Bring back our bottles!

South Tyneside Green Party has condemned the withdrawal of the traditional glass school milk bottles from South Tyneside’s schools. The Green Party Parliamentary Candidate for South Shields, Shirley Ford, has also criticised South Tyneside Council Catering Service for failing to adequately challenge the milk supplier’s decision to replace bottles with cartons made using plastic. more...

Award-winning local environmental campaigner Bryan Atkinson has been selected by the Green Party to stand as prospective parliamentary candidate for the Jarrow constituency.

Bryan, whose youngest daughter attends Jarrow School, has been at the forefront of local green campaigns for several years. He was involved in the the fight against the second Tyne road tunnel and gave evidence to a local public enquiry opposing the destruction of Green Belt land at Fellgate. more...

Councillors talking rubbish

South Tyneside Green Party has labelled other parties in South Tyneside as the "Soot Squad" for their position on waste incineration. Labour, Progressive and Conservative councillors have warmed to incineration proposals in the Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy. The strategy consultation, which ends on 20th August, has proposed a form of incineration known as 'Waste from Energy with Combined Heat and Power' (EfW with CHP), similar to the technique used in the disastrous Byker incinerator. more...

Council can't counter Tunnel's climate challenge

South Tyneside council has again demonstrated its ignorance of the environment and has been deaf to the voices of local people, says South Tyneside Green Party.

On Monday 22nd January the Gazette reported that 'opposition remains to the £185m second Tyne Tunnel'. The Primrose ward report for the council's Overview and Scrutiny Coordinating and Call-in Committee discusses "opposition to the route of the new Tyne Tunnel being faced and countered." more...

South Tyneside's council is desperate for an environmental champion, says local Green Party candidate Chris Haine.

Chris, who has been selected by the Green Party to stand in the forthcoming by-election for the Cleadon and East Boldon ward, is eager to learn what local people think are the real issues affecting them. Election candidates fall at the first environmental hurdle

Green Party candidate claims that failure to use recycled paper for election leaflets demonstrates that other candidates don’t take environmental issues seriously. With the vast majority of election leaflets already printed the Green Party is the only party to have opted to have their election leaflets printed on recycled paper.

Environmental campaigner Bryan Atkinson is particularly critical of sitting New Labour councillors for being hypocrites for not using recycled paper at the same time as lecturing the public to take part in the ‘kerb it’ scheme and recycle more. more...
