Election candidates fall at the first environmental hurdle
01.03.2006
Green Party candidate claims that failure to use recycled paper for election leaflets demonstrates that other candidates don’t take environmental issues seriously. With the vast majority of election leaflets already printed the Green Party is the only party to have opted to have their election leaflets printed on recycled paper.
Environmental campaigner Bryan Atkinson is particularly critical of sitting New Labour councillors for being hypocrites for not using recycled paper at the same time as lecturing the public to take part in the ‘kerb it’ scheme and recycle more.
Mr Atkinson is contesting the Beacon and Bents ward on a broad range of issues including social justice, environmental sustainability and the fact that he is the local candidate that lives in the ward.
Bryan Atkinson said:
“The failure of other candidates to print their election leaflets on recycled paper demonstrates that they don’t take environmental issues seriously. The council are telling the public to recycle but those very same councillors are failing to use recycled paper. That’s hypocrisy.
“If candidates can’t even get the simple things right like using recycled paper, how can they expect electors to trust them with the big issues like protecting the Greenbelt and sustainable development.”
