New green voice for Jarrow

16.10.2007

Award-winning local environment campaigner Bryan Atkinson has been selected by the Green Party to stand as prospective parliamentary candidate for the Jarrow constituency.

Bryan, whose youngest daughter attends Jarrow School, has been at the forefront of local green campaigns for several years. He was involved in the the fight against the second Tyne road tunnel and gave evidence to a local public enquiry opposing the destruction of Green Belt land at Fellgate.

He successfully brought a legal challenge which expanded the scope of the Freedom of Information Act, which means that individuals now have more access to environmental information which would otherwise have remained secret. He was recently recognised for his work by Friends of the Earth with their Earthmovers Award.

He is a supporter of clean green energy, not only backing a wind turbine at the A&P yard in Hebburn, but has long advocated the design and manufacture of wind turbines at Tyneside's underused shipyards.

Bryan said:

"Despite all the green talk from politicians, our CO2 emissions continue to rise. I will be putting forward positive policies that will improve our quality of life, without jeopardising our children's futures."

South Tyneside Green Party will be contesting both the Jarrow and South Shields constituencies.
