Greens back wind turbine plan
20.02.2008
Bryan Atkinson, Green Party parliamentary candidate for the Jarrow constituency, has pledged his support for the revived wind turbine proposal for the A&P Tyne yard at Hebburn. Bryan, who believes that renewables realistically promise the only safe, sustainable and secure energy future for Britain, has already called for the North East to lead the way in renewable generation.
Bryan Atkinson said,
"A zero-carbon Britain is essential for our future well-being and prosperity. Harnessing renewable energy is the only way towards that future, and if government and industry get behind the technology, wind can generate a significant amount of our electricity.
Bryan Atkinson said,
"Renewable energy is the only way towards zero-carbon energy, and wind can provide a significant part of the renewable energy mix. I wrote to Mr Hutton because I feel strongly about the issue, and that as well as providing the nation with clean carbon-free energy, it can also provide an opportunity to kick-start manufacturing in renewable energy in the region.
"Newcastle Airport's concerns over the turbine must be overcome. Wind power is a key component of our clean zero-carbon vision, whilst air travel will one day be considered in the same terms as many view smoking today. We can't let the short term interests of the air industry block our opportunity for a sustainable future.
"I truly hope this turbine will be built - and become a beacon and inspiration for the growth in renewable power generation in the North East."
